I am always self conscious to be friendly and inviting with my students. I teach a lot of asian adults and children that tend to be shy so I try to break the ice by asking a couple of personable questions. For adults, “What city are you from?” and for children “What’s your favorite color?”

2. Facial Expressions

Understand your perception to the student and ensure you are not looking tired. Always welcome your students with a smile. Also try to match your facial expressions with the subject matter. You don’t have to be overly dramatic, because personally I am an overall laid back person. Basically, try to add some personality since you have computer screens limiting the interaction.

3. Use Props

Use props to engage young learners. This will help connect a physical item with the words you are saying. At times I use props to learn colors, and when I am doing comparatives. For example, if I want to compare big and small; I will show my students a big ball and a small ball.

4. TPR

Using TPR is one of the most important rules to teach English online. TPR stands for a total physical response, which is a skill that takes practice. I have had to watch a few videos on YouTube to learn and practice. Essentially you are using body language to convey what you are saying to the student. For example, I point to my mouth and cup my ear when I want my student to repeat what I just said. I also use less language with young learners, more precise directions, and more body language. Use TPR to make sure students understand ex: teaching phrase “stand up,” I would stand up to demonstrate what I want my student to do. I’m most cases acting out vocabulary will help you to grab your student’s attention.

5. Use A Rewards System

Be encouraging and utilize a rewards system. Most online English companies have their own rewards systems to keep the students motivated throughout the lesson. Just don’t forget to use it because, at times, there is a lot going on from making sure the sound is good, to dealing with the students, the props and the lesson. 6. Use Simple Language

Use simple language and sentences by showing them what to do and don’t tell them what to do. Demonstrate the desired outcome as much as possible because the student may not understand what you want out of them.

Induce the conversation by asking questions where you know your student knows the answers and they can fill in the blanks. This helps to boost their confidence, especially if you add rewards or praise. Ex: pandas are ______ and _____. Help your students to fill in the blanks.

When making corrections, try not to correct while the students are reading and speaking. But remember they want to be corrected. They are not paying for your services to let them speak incorrectly. Try to make corrections after they have tried to say the target language.

Always maximize student talking time: beginners should speak 50% because they can only repeat, intermediate learners should speak 60% of the time, and advanced learners should speak 70% of the time. Arrange your session time effectively. The best way to understand how to gauge your slides is if you had did some preparation for the lesson beforehand. Break down pronunciation by writing and saying words out in separate chunks. Moderate your speaking speed- not too fast and not to slow.
